Hotel Review: The Pilgrm, London

Inspired by old-world design and the glory of British craftsmanship, The Pilgrm brings a sense of provenance to today's modern traveler. All the frills have been stripped back so you’re left with simple, but considered, hallmarks: smooth check-in, meticulous design, appealing brunch menu, and coffee bar for take-away. In short, it’s the future of city hotelier-ing.

The perks and design love aside, The Pilgrm my go-to London stay for its affordability and mostly incredible convenience to Paddington Station. A 5-minute walk to the station and a 15-minute train ride on the Heathrow Express and you’re at the airport!

Come here if you want a hands-off stay; don’t if you want white-gloved bellhops. There’s not really a reception desk: guests check-in and out online, and pay before you arrive. All you need to do is pick up your room key from a 24-hour host stationed in the café.

Seventy-three rooms are set across three wings - categorized into Small, Medium, and Large. They are compact, with the emphasis on the bespoke beds, backed by parquet paneling and topped with comfortable mattresses.

White metro-tiled bathrooms with decent showers and an enamel sink. Downside: there isn’t much of a shelf to place your toiletries and the frosted bathroom door means that your room buddy should be more than just an acquaintance 😉

No phones (you can text) or room service – each floor has its own 24-hour pantry with snacks and hot drinks.

I’d say my only issue with the hotel would be staying in the summer months. Like most hotels, there is no A/C. This means it can be hot in the summer especially if you can’t open the window or if the room lacks a fan.

The bar and lounge area that’s great for grabbing a table and drink at the same time. It’s usually quite quiet during the day, so great for those who don’t like much noise when working.

The quality of the short all-day menu belies the size of the kitchen. Expect colorful, vegetable-heavy dishes. Breakfast is also short but well-thought-out: everything from poached eggs with horseradish ketchup to fluffy pancakes with berry compote. I mostly go for the local sourdough with butter and jam.

Small rooms from £129 in low season; and from £169 in high. Breakfast is included if you book directly. Free Wi-Fi.

Family-Friendly?

Cots are available but no extra beds can be added to rooms.
